It never ceases to amaze me how technology these days allows us to do the most remarkable things. I am still mesmerised by the new MP3 players and cellphones and the number of things you can do with them. I wish I had such mobile devices when I was a teenager. Its no wonder that my daughters phones and MP3s have to amputated from them in order to recharge them up! They just cant live without them, or so they tell me. I absolutely refuse to pay extra money to allow my kids satellite TV in their bedrooms, they simply would not get any sleep at night! However, I now have the ability to watch TV on my computer by simple technology and a one off payment which works out cheaper than Sky or other packages. How innovative is that? I can take the laptop to my bedroom and we can watch a film, documentary, or anything else in bed and dont even need a television up there! I can see me visiting the shops soon to invest in a bigger screened laptop just for the purpose, seems a reasonable excuse to me anyway. I have no idea yet how easy or reliable this new concept is. I am told that it is extremely simple. Judging by the media hype and the number of sales I can only assume that this is the way forward for all of us parents with TV addicts for offspring who could simply to with an extra portable television. I think I have just persuaded myself to give it a try and maybe save myself a few battles for that remote control...

While watching Standard definition or SD the quality of the picture is very good and we were surprised by the display from the Sky+ box - the colors are vibrant, precise and look very natural. The reason? Sony's technology called "Live Color Creation" which delivers a 30% wider color range than standard LCD technology. In HD, the picture is really clean and very sharp. The 500 cd/m2 brightness is responsible for the very sharp picture on this TV. Compared to some models of other brands, we were highly impressed with this one.

The out-of-the-box picture settings are nice, but calibration will be necessary for the best picture quality. Lower quality compressed channels look better on this 323 screen than on the 403 version.

Sony's Motion Flow technology reduces motion blur quite a bit - this is not a very common feature for LCD TVs in this price range.

Although this is an entry level model, its black level performance is quite impressive and there is almost no grayness during the dark scenes. The non-reflective screen and viewing angle of 178 allow the picture to be seen from virtually any angle.

The sound quality you get from this Sony TV is very good, with deep and clear definition. We really weren't expecting the built in speakers to be this great. There are many ways to adjust sound quality that best suits you.

This television has a plenty of connections including 3 HDMI, 2 Scarts, composite, component and S-video inputs so you can connect it with a wide range of devices.

It's very easy and quick to set up, even a child could do it. You can choose to put it on automatic set up and you don't have to do anything else. Still, if you want you can fine tune almost everything and it's very straightforward to do it.

We bought this TV a couple months ago at Best Buy. This is a great TV for the money. It's big of course, and it has a bright sharp image. The resolution is fantastic. (When watching nature shows you can see an individual hair on a lion's ear...awesome). My house is now the place for the kids to come to to watch movies. We will probably host our first real Superbowl party around this machine too. It has inputs for just about everything, and my next test will be to run an s-video cable to it from the laptop. I gave it only four stars because I'm not 100% satisfied with the audio. It's good, but I think it could be sharper and deeper. Comcast HD has a music channel (Palladia) and the sound from the TV doesn't do concerts in HD justice. I have to crank it way up to get heavy sound when watching action movies. Bottom line: Excellent image and features. If you are planning to combine this with a home theater audio set up, you won't go wrong. If you expect home theater quality audio off this set, you will be disappointed.

this tv is the bomb , regular cable chanels look great on it and of course hd . but the hidden gem is , it displays more than 720 p. thats right 1080p not i , but p .i tested it with the ps3 first , i didnt believe it first , than i tried the xbox360 and i got the same thing . i made sure its the same model . read it on the back of the tv and the box . it says 720p .But it does full 1080p . i originaly got this tv in the store , as advertised it is 720p.but look to my suprise .i wanted to compare price to amazon .i overpayed 300 dollars ,which is ok . i am happy . so folks get it from here , u wont be sorry .u get more than it says . just wanted to share this

When you go out to shop for your first high-def TV, you may be confused by the many, many different specifications you'll find on each. While a complete description of the different specs would take a book, you can learn more than just the difference between plasma and LCD in just the next couple of minutes.

Start with that difference. The three basic types of high-def TVs available today are the LCD TV, the plasma TV, and the DLP TV, a modern version of the old projection television. LCDs and DLPs are back-lit, making it harder to display clear black colors; plasma TVs are lit in a somewhat different manner, so they have very realistic blacks, but they tend to be a little more expensive and a lot more delicate. A DLP TV usually looks good, and the back lighting is simple to switch out for anyone, giving it perhaps the longest lifespan of any other high-def TV out there, and if you have a projector rather than an enclosed system, you can scale the picture to fit your space - a nice advantage. But DLP TVs are also likely to have the worst picture of the three.

Next, size. All high def TVs have a wide aspect ratio, so instead of the nearly-square traditional television screen shape, they have a movie-theatre shaped screen, often called 16:9 aspect ratio. This doesn't vary, so don't worry about that. (Regular TVs, for comparison, have a 4:3 aspect ratio, though this is hardly ever cited.) Screens are measured on the diagonal, so a high def TV may seem smaller than a traditional TV with the same listed screen size - and it is unlikely to fit smoothly into the same space. Keep this in mind.

Resolution is more complicated. Traditional TV has 480i resolution. This means that the picture on the screen is shown in 480 lines; the "i" stands for "interlaced", meaning that odd lines are shown first, then even lines, with about a sixtieth of a second of display before switching. Our vision tricks us into thinking this is a smooth screen. Rarer 480p TVs have all the lines shown at once, and you'll notice a distinctly better picture.

On high-def televisions, on the other hand, sets start at 720p; most are right around 1080p. Watch this; you want to make sure every video peripheral, like blu-ray readers and cable boxes, are compatible with this resolution. A mismatch here is the number-one reason your high-def TV may not look as good as it should. Also, more is not better; while you can get better than 1080p, if your peripherals don't match (and most won't), you won't get a good picture.

All standard high-def TVs will have specs falling in the following ranges. Try to keep your TV and your peripherals matched as closely as possible, and you'll have the best viewing experience.

* 1080 lines with 1920 vertical pixels; 16:9 aspect ratio; and either 60i, 30p, or 24p display (referencing time between refreshes)
* 720 lines with 1280 vertical pixels; 16:9 aspect ratio; and either 60i, 30p, or 24p display
* 480 lines with 704 vertical pixels; 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio; and either 60p, 60i, 30p, or 24p display

When choosing a high-def TV, more lines is generally better, 16:9 is better, and a high number plus p makes for the best display. And while HDTV is backward compatible with traditional broadcast, it's smart to invest in HD channels; the picture is much, much better with a high-def TV.

Customer Review: Philips 50PFP5332D 50" DEAD IN 5 MONTHS, 2nd one DEAD IN 33 DAYS!
This TV had a beautiful picture, for the first 5 months then died. Mfg. Warranty specifically states Philips has the right to send out a refurbished TV as the replacement, it took 2 months to arrive from Ohio. The replacement lasted 33 days and began to turn itself off. Contact w/Philips Cust. Service, again they stated per policy, they want to send another refurbished model or a LCD TV instead of the plasma unit. Research indicates this mfg. is no longer making plasma TV's for US distribution, parts and repair are almost impossible even on a 5 month old TV, opps, 33 day old TV. Recent discussion w/ six independent repair services has informed me this model has been, and I quote, "a dog from day one"... It's football season and my brand new big screen is no longer working!! This TV has been broken more time than it has been operable since I purchased it in Dec. 2007... SAVE YOUR MONEY, BUY ANYTHING ELSE, DONATE IT TO CHARITY, BUT DON'T GIVE YOUR HARD EARNED $ TO PHILIPS!!!

LCD Backlighting For HDTV

LCD is winning the race to be the dominant display technology for HDTV. According to DisplaySearch, in 2007, the market for LCD (liquid crystal diode) TVs was estimated at $27.4 billion. LCD TV shipments rose a stronger than expected 52% year to year in the second quarter of 2008 to nearly 7.5 million units (79.8% of total HDTV sales).

The LCD screen on a LCD HDTV is a selective light filter. It does not in itself emit light, but selectively filters light passing through the display from the back. Most HDTVs include either a single sheet of luminescent plastic or sidelighting with fluorescent lamps to provide the backlight. Both techniques are difficult to control.

Many consumers focus on screen resolution when selecting a High Def (HDTV) system. Is this HDTV 720p, 1020i, or 1020p? However, when an expert group, the SMPTE (Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers), recently ranked the importance of screen resolution, it ranked fourth. The SMPTE ranked contrast ratio, color saturation, color temperature and grayscale ahead of screen resolution in importance. The Imaging Science Foundation reached a similar conclusion. Backlighting is the key component to improvement in contrast ratio and grayscale.

It is important that an LCD system allows for adjustment of the level of backlighting, and preferably, performs this function automatically. This will improve the contrast of the picture. Also, a reduced backlight level will also reduce power consumption and extend lamp life, as the power used and lamp lifetime is directly related to the backlight level. A lamp with a 50,000 hour lifetime at 6 milliamps may only have a 30,000 hour lifetime if the current is 7 milliamps, just 1 milliamp higher (Example: Sharp Electronics LCD Display).

Another important factor in the choice of backlighting is the consideration of "blur". Blur occurs when there is rapid motion in the programming, such as sports. When the picture changes quickly, the pixels can lag in response. Effective backlight engineering can reduce this significantly by strobing the backlighting, so that the individual pixels do not remain lit longer than needed. Examples of this technique include the Philips "Aptura" and the Samsung "LED Motion Plus".

Sidelighting

With sidelighting, the backlight is located in the back of the LCD panel, and to each side to create panel illumination. To make the light more uniform, a light diffuser is located between the lamps and the rear of the optical filter module. Most LCD systems that use sidelighting use cold cathode fluorescents (CCF) lamps. This technology provides a very bright white light. The lifetime of the lamps is usually between 10,000 to 20,000 hours (6-12 years at a rate of 5 hours of use per day).

The most important disadvantage is that the intensity of light cannot be varied locally, and sidelighting can look non-uniform. Some CCF lamps contain mercury. This is an ecological disadvantage.

Conventional Backlighting

Most backlighting is performed with a single sheet of electroluminescent plastic. These panels can age (though improvements in this area have reduced this problem). Electroluminescent Panel backlighting uses colored phosphors to generate light. Displays using this technique can be thin and lightweight, and provide even light distribution.

The major drawbacks:

Limited life of 3,000 to 5,000 hours to half brightness (2-3 years at a rate of 5 hours of use per day).
The intensity of light cannot be varied locally.

LED Backlighting

LED backlighting uses a matrix of LEDs that can be controlled individually to offer very good control. In this configuration, a large number of LEDs are mounted uniformly behind the display. Brightness improvements in LEDs have made them more practical for backlighting. NEC pioneered this technique with their monitor, the 2180WG. Other companies, such as Samsung, have recently introduced versions of this technology. This should push prices down (the Samsung model cost less than 1/3 the price of a comparable NEC monitor).

This system offers local dimming technology and can achieve 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. True actual black levels (the "Holy Grail" of LCD) are attainable by shutting off a pixel's light source. This can eliminate the grayish black picture typical of many LCD HDTVs. Groups of LEDs can be locally controlled to produce more light, increasing the brightness when necessary.

The problem with conventional white LEDs is that their spectrum is not ideal for photographic reproduction because they are basically blue LEDs with a yellow phosphor on top. Their color spectrum has two peaks, one at blue and another at yellow. White LEDs that are based on a group of red, green and blue LEDs are ideal for the RGB color filters of an LCD and can result in the most saturated colors. Sony's "Triluminos" LED backlight system is an example of this technique.
Sometimes, these HDTVs have a row of LEDs across the top and bottom of the display. This improves the brightness and color reproduction, and enables almost complete uniformity across the display.

LED backlights are much more efficient that alternative techniques. And since the LED backlight waste less energy, less heat is generated, that must be managed with air conditioning. LED backlights offer a long operating lifetime of more than 50,000 hours (more than 25 years of use at a rate of 5 hours a day).

LED backlit systems may not show well in a typical retail environment. Typically, the screens are somewhat reflective in order to achieve the high contrast ratio, and subsequently, a brightly lit showroom may not flatter this technology. In a more typical less-lit environment, this problem should not be as noticeable.

Engineering Concerns

The electrical engineering is simpler with LED backlights. Cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCF) require high AC voltages (1,500 VAC) at startup, and operating voltages of 700 VAC or more. When the lamp is new it may take much less voltage to start, but with age the voltage requirements usually increase, complicating a designer's problem. An electroluminescent panel requires a voltage of about 100 VAC @ 400 Hertz.

A power inverter (to generate VAC) is needed for both CCF and electroluminescent panels to operate with a DC power supply. This is a significant expense, in cost, size, and weight of the system. The best inverter for this application permits the output voltage to automatically increase as the lamps age, extending the useful life of the lamps.

LCD systems with LED backlighting utilize low voltage DC, usually 12 or 24 VDC. This results in a smaller, simpler, and more reliable system. LED backlit systems must be well cooled or their performance can suffer. The LEDs generate less heat than CCF lamps, but the heat is very concentrated. Operating at high temperatures reduces the LED lifetime and shifts their light spectrum, while reducing output luminance.

OLED

A new technology that you will be hearing about in the future is Organic LED (OLED). This technology has a completely different backlight technology, it doesn't need one. Because of this, they draw much less power. And because there is no backlight, an OLED system has a larger viewing angle than an LED system. An OLED display is much thinner than an LCD display. The response time for OLED is faster than normal LCD screens. An average of 8 to 12 milliseconds in response time is normal for a LCD compared to 0.01 milliseconds in response time for an OLED.

Sony introduced an 11" HDTV at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. The new 11" Sony TV is called the "XEL-1". It's very thin (1/10") and currently sells for $2500. Samsung demonstrated a 31" OLED HDTV with 1080P resolution at a tradeshow in Asia in November. LG, Toshiba, Matsushita (Panasonic), and others are investing hundreds of millions of dollars, developing this extremely promising technology. Toshiba has plans to sell a 30" OLED display in 2009. Samsung has announced they will sell large screen OLED HDTVs in 2010.

OLED displays have already been used for some time in digital cameras, cell phones and other devices with relatively small panels, because they are very energy efficient, which is very important in portable devices.

In theory, OLED displays can be more inexpensively manufactured than LCD or plasma displays, meaning that they should not be as expensive. Remember that the first large LCD and Plasma displays were much more expensive when they were first introduced.

Summary

LCD HDTVs and monitors with LED array backlighting are now the approach of choice because they exhibit better image quality while saving power. The ability to locally control light output is key to achieving high contrast ratios.

I have been using two of these amps for several months (one in continuous use) and have had no problems. The picture quality is excellent from my Comcast cable input. At first I thought there was a problem but later determined that the signal strength was too high for my Olevia HDTV and it had the effect of making some of the stations freeze. I put a couple of cheap splitters in line with the input to my TV (to reduce the signal strength) and the problem cleared up. I have not tried an output for Broadband or Over the Air signals so I cannot comment on those applications.

Customer Review: Great Picture, Dumb Remote
Great picture, using over the air digital channel. If you are someoene like me who doesnt have too much time, doesnt mess around with too many settinmgs and is just looking for a good TV out of the box, this is one of them . I dont have the patience or the inclination to mess with too many settings. I just want it to work . The only issue is that the remote design was done by someone who wasnt very bright. The remote is HUGE, not very well designed and the channel and volume controls are placed awkardly and not very easy to use them. It;s horrible to be honest. you have been warned. but if you can live with it, go ahead and buy this product.
Customer Review: No issues after a year
We purchased this TV on Black Friday 2007. A year later, we're still incredibly happy with our purchase. HD signals look incredibly. Normal tv signals are still watchable. I've noticed sometimes with really fast sports that the tv sometimes has trouble keeping up. This is pretty rare and usually with sports that involve fast panning by the camera. The only other thing I noticed after we got the TV was that commercials are crazy loud. Our old TV I believe had a feature that automatically adjusted the volume level of commercials so they weren't louder than the program. This TV definitely does not have that feature!

Customer Review: Worth it if you can get it below $2000
This is not a comprehensive review-just a review of what features I personally use in this HDTV as of this writing (January 2009). I just wanted to post my support for Sony making a very nice LCD-based HDTV. I'm not a high end video enthusiast, and I bought the unit on sale ($1700), as I thought the launch price of $2500 was WAY too much. Anyway, I mostly use it with my Playstation 3 games and Blu-Ray movies, and may use it for PC gaming later. The images are nice and crisp and the anti-judder "motionflow" is creepy, but cool. Watching Rambo 4 panning sequences makes it look like actual live action, so for movies that are shot natively at 24 FPS, the technology has a "wow factor" that has to be seen to be believed. Wipeout HD looks fantastic on it, and seeing Blu-Ray resolution images on something of this size (or bigger) is a noticeable step up in visual quality that standard DVD resolutions just don't have even if they are upscaled. I plugged in my wife's laptop and with a gold-plated VGA connector, the 1280X1024 resolution was good, but her laptop doesn't offer a 1920X1080 resolution so if you have the intent to use the HDTV as a giant computer monitor, check to make sure your video card has the option of 1920X1080. The unit includes some JPEG images hardwired to the Linux-powered BRAVIA system, and so the colors are really robust on a high quality still picture. The navigation menus are pretty easy to use including the network setup. The audio has a good volume to it, and there is just enough bass to balance everything out. The simulated surround sound also works nicely. The unit feels like it is under 50 pounds so it's easily movable and the chassis is very attractive (I like the "floating LED" on the front). So far the only negative here is that the remote control cannot control my Playstation 3 Blu-Ray DVD functionality. I assumed that it would... If you can get this HDTV under $2000, like the price I paid for it, it's still expensive, but I think it's worth it. Highly recommended.
Customer Review: Great TV poor service by Amazon
I ordered this from Amazon and it was to be delivered on the 31 Dec. When it did not arrive, I called Amazon on the 2d of Jan as the web tracking was last updated 23 Dec and showed it in Sacramento. The gave me a phone number to call the shipper. Four calls later I finally located the TV at the shipper and had the option of waiting another 6 days for them to deliver or go get it myself. It was a 20 mile trip each way. The bottom of the box was open and after a quick (too quick) inspection the shipper retaped the bottom of the box and I brought it home. When opened the manual, batteries, and screws to attach the base were missing. I called Amazon and they said their TV department would contact me. They did and told me I should call Sony to find out if they would supply the missing parts. I said they should call Sony or send me a new TV. They sent a new e-mail saying they had called Sony and if I called Sony, Sony would send the parts. I did call Sony and after 1.5 hours on the phone, I got the parts ordered. Oh, and the said it will only take 7 to 10 business days to get the missing parts to me. I will try the TV when they arrive. In the mean time, Amazon's lack of service is a source of irritation.

Decent PCI TV tuner with good picture quality. Hauppauge software WinTV sucked, so ended up using it with Vista Media Center and it worked fine. Could not get QAM working but that's ok. Have been using it for the last year or so. But if someone would want to buy it now, I would not recommend it for this price. There are better cards available like the 2250 from Hauppauge.
Customer Review: Nice picture. Clumsy software.
This gives a fine picture on a fairly ordinary PC with 2GB RAM and 2.6Ghz Pentium 4 processor with Windows XP. But, the setup configuration is confusing and non-intuitive. For instance, the inputs on the config screen don't seem to match the physical input jacks and, in some cases, are listed twice. I had a black-and-white picture with no audio after following the instruction sheet and was about to ask for tech support when I accidentally tried another input that I was certain was incorrect and "magically" cured the audio and color problems. No opinion on the remote or the recording capability as I'm feeding the board with an external digital-to-analog TV converter box and using its controls instead of the Hauppauge remote, and am not recording (i.e., no PVR use). But, I get a nice picture that can be resized and no obvious effect on PC performance.

There is a single file format specified for use with all the DVD Books A - D.This file system is the UDF/ISO-9660 Bridge format. UDF (Universal Disc Format) was designed specifically for optical media and has evolved from the ISO-9660 format. The benefit of this single file system is the ability for the DVD media to be compatible across set top players and personal computers with DVD ROM players.

The top level of organisation on a DVD disc is a volume. The volume contains a single DVD Video zone which contains all the data elements for the set-top video title,
and a DVD others zone which can be used for non-DVD-video data elements such as desktop computer applications.

It is important to note that currently set top players cannot accss the DVD Other zones as they only know how to access the DVD video zone.

Computers can access the DVD Other zones and run applications that allow for a fuller interaction with the DVD Video zone.

DVD Volume structure

At the top of the structure is the DVD as a whole with its DVD other and video zone. Within the DVD video zone is the video manager, which is a master directory for the data elements, followed by 1 to 99 video title sets which inclue the video and audio elements. The video manager usually includes an introductory clip of video such as a logo, and a menu for navigation.

Video Title sets and Video Objects

Following the video manager are the video title sets. A DVD can contain multiple title sets.
A Video Title Set (VTS) is made up of a VTS Menu, and one or more video titles. Titles in turn can be broken down into Parts of Titles (PTT).

The data within the video title is made up of Video Object Sets (VOBS), which are made up of one or more Video Objects (VOB). A video object is made up of the video audio, navigation data and subpictures for a program.

It is the VOB which is the fundamental media file element of the DVD disc.
The lowest branch of the DVD structure is the cell. Each VOB can be broken down into one or more cells. A cell may be as large as the entire movie or as small as an MPEG GOP (Group of Pictures).

For example a movie with 5 chapters would have one video manager, one title set, one title, one VOBS made up of one VOB and 10 cells.

Multiple Title Sets and VOBS become apparent when interactive titles are created.

A DVD that included an interactive music video programme with ten artists, each with five videos, artist information.

In this case the disc would have: on video manager, ten Video Title Sets, multiple Titles for each video. The reason for this division is that the DVD remote control has both Title and Menu buttons. The user can click on the Title button to return to the main DVD menu to select a title, or click on the Menu button to go to the menus for the particular title being viewed.

Customer Review: Well Worth It At 3 Times The Price
I just purchased a VR-1 TV Volume Controller to keep the volume of commercials from blasting the remote out of my hand. To my surprise not only did it resolved the issue with the commercials but it also makes the programs much more enjoyable. I can now enjoy the whispers as well as the explosions instead of grabbing the remote. My TV supports both HDMI and Component RCA Video and Audio inputs. The VR-1 is connected in the audio component connections. This way if I won't the sound without the VR-1 I change my channel to the HDMI channel. If I won't the VR-1 to maintain my volume I switch to the Component channel. While the TV remote adjust the sound as normal. The only this I use the remote for now is changing the channels.
Customer Review: Buy this to control the wild audio levels on converter boxes.
I installed the Philco Converter box with analog feed thru. The audio levels vary so wildly between channels, between network feeds and locals and then back to network, between program material and commercials, that something had to be done or you would wear out the volume control on your remote. Since the networks and local stations, the ad agencies and the FCC will not do anything to control these wild audio level swings, you have to buy added equipment to control it for them. This controller should do it for you. Just install it between the converter box left and right audio output and your TV left and right audio inputs. Feed the digital channel from your video output on your converter box to the video input on your TV or VCR. Adjust your digital viewing to come in on the AUX or Video input. Enjoy.

Don't Buy That 60-Inch Plasma TV!

Why shouldn't you buy a 60-inch plasma TV? Because there's a much better, affordable solution. How would you like to be able to look at an 8 FOOT screen with quality comparable to 16mm film projection? What if I said you could get it for under $1200? Well, you can with a projection TV.

Projection TV

If you're going low-budget, one well-reviewed option is the Mitsubishi HC3000U High Definition 720p DLP Home Theater Projector. PC World, the computer magazine, honored the HC3000U with a 2006 PC World Innovations Award after comparing it to hundreds of other products. Compared to other projectors, the midtones are much brighter, which results in richer blacks and a more vivid image overall. It's even a cinch to install. As of this writing, it's run you about 950 bucks.

Mounting Hardware

If you're planning on mounting the projector in the ceiling, you could go with the Atdec TH-WH-PJ-FM Telehook Universal Projector Flush Mount. The mount allows the projector to be rotated a full 360 degrees, and has a quick release for easy installation. That'll run you about 50 bucks.

Projection Screen

You'll want a screen to go along with your home theater projector. You could project it on a bare white wall, but you won't get the best possible performance out of your projector. The budget option is to get a manual screen, as opposed to an electronically operated one. One highly-rated manual screen is the Draper Screen Luma 106" Diameter. That's about 130 bucks.

Audio

If you're hooking your equipment up to your stereo, you'll already have excellent sound. That's the budget solution anyway.

The need for acoustically treating a particular area or room can depend on lifestyle, legal issues or environmental factors ranging from a operating a home theater system, to owning a recording studio or even residing close to a major city highway or airport.

With this in mind, it is easy to understand why acoustically insulating a specific region could be desirable. It can minimize the amount of noise pollution entering from an external source, or conversely keep sound contained within a particular area.

TV shelving has undergone somewhat of a design revolution recently, as bulky televisions transform into home entertainment systems with sleek plasma TVs and surround-sound speaker systems.

When trying to extend your battery life, you can try one of several tactics. One is to fully charge your battery before using it. Refurbished plasma TVs have the same quality as the new ones you buy in stores, and they come at much lower prices. But you have to be careful when you buy. There are some things you should think about if you want to be fully satisfied.

1. Check the price against new models. Don't automatically expect new to cost more. A good savings should be between 30% and 70%, depending on whether it was refurbished by the factory or by a third party. The manufacturer refurb will usually cost a bit more.

2. Be careful with refurbished and reconditioned. In popular conception, a refurbished item was once defective but is now fixed. That is only partially true. For a plasma television to be qualified as refurbished, it had to go back to the manufacturer, be reprocessed, then offered for sale again, whether it had a defect or not. Here are some of the main reasons units are returned:

- There was a manufacturing defect, most often a malfunctioning part.
- The end customer changed his or her mind and returned it to the retailer.
- There is shipping and surface damage like scratches or scrapes.
- The plasma TV was used as a demonstration unit.
- The box was opened.
- It was returned as an overstock item.

Note that a reconditioned television is simply a used product that has been repaired and is in working order. Although it is almost always cheaper than refurbished, there are some negatives.

- It may have been used for a long period by a previous owner.
- Often it is repaired by a third party instead of the manufacturer.
- The replaced parts might be used or alternative instead of new and original.
- Many reconditioned units were originally leased, which means a lot of wear and tear.

Beware of slick wording that states refurbished when it means used or reconditioned.

3. Try to buy a manufacturer refurb if possible. At the very least, this ensures that any replaced components were approved by the manufacturer.

4. Get a warranty. A manufacturer refurbished plasma television warranty will usually cover less time than for a new unit. Typical times are 90 days for refurbished and a year for new. Often you can buy a factory warranty extension for 100-200 dollars.

Third party refurbishing companies do offer warranties, so do not fail to get one.

5. See if the retailer has a return policy if you are not happy with the refurbished plasma TV. A typical return time is at least 15 days. This gives you time to make sure everything is in working order with the product.

6. Refurbished inventory changes constantly, so if you are interested in an item, don't delay. You have to be careful, but you also have to be aware that if you take too long, the deal will no longer be available.

7. Keep in mind that the larger a screen is, the more expensive it usually is.

8. An enhanced definition model (without high definition) should be a lot cheaper. This may sound confusing, but there are three digital TV broadcasting technologies:

SD - Standard Definition
ED - Enhanced Definition
HD - High Definition

Standard and enhanced definition can be broadcast in both 4:3 square screen format and widescreen format, but with reduced picture quality. High definition is always broadcast in wide screen.

Do not confuse this with native resolution, which is inside the TV unit itself. Native resolution deals with how the TV processes the broadcast signal in pixels. If a display has at least 720 lines of vertical resolution, it is high definition. 720p and 1080p are both HD. 1080p has more pixels, so it can display a sharper, more detailed picture, but 720p gives a great picture.

Although resolution is talked about a lot, other parameters are just as important: contrast ratio, color saturation, color accuracy, and 1080i. You need to be a bit of a geek to understand all this, but be aware that it is possible for a 720p unit to provide a better picture than a 1080p, although that is not normally the case.

9. Plasma televisions usually last a decade or longer, but the display degrades with burn-in near the end. So try to find out when the refurbished model was made. This can be a good indicator of whether a plasma TV really is refurbished instead of reconditioned.

10. Keep in mind the size of your room. Plasma TVs typically range from 37 to 65 inches (screen measured diagonally), but can go up to 80 inches or more. You need a sturdy wall to hold it and you need some empty wall space unless you like a space-age environment. For viewing distance, a general rule is to plan from 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen width. So a 40 inch screen means you should sit about 5 to 8 feet away.

If you follow those simple tips, you will not need to wait for seasonal and clearance sales to save money. You can get a refurbished plasma television that is literally as good as new.

Does wanting a discounted TV make you a cheap-o? More like a practical bloke, actually. Find out the reason why it's cheap.

When buying discounted televisions, keep mouthy chef Emeril's words in mind, "Why is it on sale? Go figure!" Remember that manufacturers and retailers don't just give you a discount on their goods just because they're in a good mood or that they've decided to do a good thing to their fellowmen. They have a well-calculated strategy for this marketing technique and you should be able to know the reason behind the low prices.

Sales happen for a variety of reasons. Clearance sales, for example, mean that the unit you're about to purchase is being sold at a discount because it's an older unit, hasn't been purchased after spending a while on the shelves, the retailer no longer wants to display the brand or model or the manufacturer has decided to halt the production of that model.

Whatever the reason, best check the TVs yourself to see which one offers the best in terms of picture quality, features and of course, discounted price.

Look for cheaper brands.

Some of the lesser-known brands will offer discounted televisions, usually through authorized dealers and retailers. These, you can find at electronic shops, special display areas at the mall and online sites. Discounted TVs are frequently sold with prices cut down from as low as 15% to as much as 35%. You could save as much as $200 for a single purchase.

There are also newer brands to hit the circuit, many of which offer their products at significantly lower prices than name brands. The optimum TV screen size is directly related to the available viewing distance but there are other factors as well that need to be taken into consideration.

Viewing Distance: Is it just a matter of personal preference?

Sit too close to your big screen TV and you will be able to see the image build-up structure - scanning lines or pixels forming the image thus distracting your attention and spoiling your home theater experience. Yet, sit too far away, and the impact will be lost.

There are differing opinions on the best way to determine the optimum TV viewing distance for a specific screen size. Just go to the movie theater and you will soon realize that it is all a question of personal preference - some would sit at the very back. Others would go straight to the front row, as they prefer the bigger picture and a wider angle of view, while some would simply choose their seat randomly somewhere in between these two extremes.

The truth is that there are no scientific rules her. This does not mean that there aren't any guidelines that you should follow when planning a big screen purchase or a would-be home theater room.

SMPTE Recommendations and the THX Certification standards:

The Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers (SMPTE) recommends that the screen size for home theater use should occupy a 30 degrees field of view - in the horizontal plan - for the audience. Alternatively, the ideal TV viewing distance should be such that the screen width occupies an angle of 30 degrees from the viewing position.

This 30-degrees viewing angle seems to have been accepted by many as the standard in home theater and motion picture viewing.

This SMPTE guideline is also in line with the THX certification standards in that these recommend that the back row of seats should have at least a 26 degrees viewing angle and while recommending an optimum viewing angle of 36 degrees.

It is believed that within these viewing angle limits, the viewer will get better immersed into the action movie itself.

Vision System limitations:

There is also the issue of TV viewing distance based on visual acuity. This does not represent the optimum viewing distance - rather, this relates to the maximum viewing distance beyond which some picture detail will be lost.

Technically speaking, visual acuity is a measure of the eye spatial resolving power and indicates the angular size of the smallest detail that a person visual system can resolve. A person with 20/20 (or 6/6 when expressed in meters) normal vision can resolve a spatial pattern separated by a visual angle of one minute of arc angle i.e. 1/60th of a degree, at the eye when viewed at 20 feet away. Expressed differently, a person with normal 20/20 vision is capable of identifying an object with a height of 1.76mm at 20 feet way.

In terms of TV viewing distances, these represent the point beyond which some of the picture detail will no longer be resolved by the viewer vision system.

So How Does All This Translate In Practical Terms?

A few rules-of-thumb can help put in practice the guidelines detailed above. These rules for viewing distance refer to the screen width rather than the screen diagonal and therefore apply to both 4:3 and 16:9 display formats.

A general rule for the TV viewing distance based on the SMPTE and visual acuity guidelines, is that the nearest TV viewing distance between you and your big screen TV should be limited to approximately twice the screen width (more precise 1.87 x screen width for a subtended angle of 30 degrees), while the furthest distance being no more than five times the width of your screen.

This rule of thumb should give you a fairly good approximation for your TV viewing distance. It does not necessarily represent the ideal home theater viewing distance but rather the limits within which your TV viewing distance should theoretically be out of the trouble zone.

In other words, move closer than twice the screen width size, and the picture scanning lines, pixels and any other video artifacts will become too visibly intrusive - leading to distractions that will spoil your movie watching experience. Move further away than 5 times the screen width and your vision system will no longer be able to resolve all the picture detail.

But

It is also important to realize that these maximum and minimum viewing distances should be seen in the light of the video signal definition.

A fully resolved high definition TV (1080i, 1920x1080) supports a closer viewing distance than standard analog TV. Thus while twice the screen width would be the ideal TV viewing distance for a HDTV display, it would be a bit too close for standard TV; in the later case, a three times the screen width would be a better option.

Similarly, the five times the screen width as the maximum view distance, while more than adequate for a standard analog TV picture, is a bit too far away for a person to see the fine detail supported by a HDTV picture a three to four times the screen width represents a more practical limit for the maximum viewing distance in the case of HDTV.

These rules-of-thumb work best with big screen TV sizes in the range 42-inches and over.

When it comes to the use of regular-size standard definition analog TVs in the home theater, i.e. up to 36 / 40 diagonal, the optimum viewing distance range is between 8 feet and 12 feet. TV sets smaller than 36-inches aren't big enough to qualify for Home Theater use; their smaller screen size will not provide the desired impact on the viewer.

Vertical Angle of View & Screen Height:

For optimum viewing, the eyes of the viewer should be level with the center of the screen.

Maximum vertical angle of view: In those home theater set-ups where this is not possible, the SMPTE guidelines suggest that the maximum vertical angle measured at the seated eye height from the front row center seat to the top most part of the projected image should not exceed 35 degrees.

This does not represent the optimum viewing angle but rather the limit beyond which the viewer will be subject to an increased neck strain.

This maximum vertical angle limit is always measured from the front row as this represent the extreme angle of view.

Minimum angle of vision: While there do not appear to be any specific SMPTE or THX guidelines in this respect, yet studies have shown that if the screen size occupies less than 15 degrees of the viewer's vertical field of view, than that image appears small.

Practical Considerations:

In a typical home theater set-up, you do not need to really worry about neither the maximum vertical angle of view, nor about the minimum vertical angle of vision for an effective movie theater experience.

If one were to adhere to the recommended TV viewing distance of twice the screen width (as further detailed above based on the SMPTE guideline of 30 degrees horizontal field of vision), you would automatically be complying with the minimum angle of vision. The reason being that there is a fixed relation between screen height and width in accordance to your home theater screen aspect ratio of either 16:9 or 4:3.

Further more, in a typical home theater setup, it would be very difficult to exceed the maximum vertical angle of view beyond which you will be subject to an increased neck strain.

Taking into account that most home theater rooms are approximately 10 feet (3m) high, the resultant vertical viewing angle is normal well within the maximum of 35 degrees detailed in the SMPTE guidelines all you have to do is just remain within the twice the screen width guideline for your viewing distance.

All home entertainment units have three major components that are essential to creating a functional home theater system. The main focus of any theater is the television or video display. Sound quality is essential. A complete sound system is key to providing the soul and voice of the theatre. A source player is the third element, providing the picture and sound. Cable or satellite TV is standard in most homes but DVD and other players are also added to expand the usefulness of a home theater. It is these three major pieces of electronic innovation that make watching a movie, playing the XBox or listening to a favorite CD enjoyable and worthwhile.

Visual Element

There are video display options available to a home depending on budget and preferences.

Rear Projection Television. Television technology has been based on the cathode ray tube (CRT) up until the 21st century. In a rear projection TV, there are three tubes, each representing one of the primary colors. This colors mix along with quality wiring and a good screen, provide a very high resolution picture. Manufacturers are starting to drop rear project televisions from their product lines however. Research your manufacturer's warranty before purchasing a rear projection television to make sure that customer service and repairs will be available down the line.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) Television. An LCD TV can be found as both a rear projection and as a flat screen. LCD rear projection TVs are much more compact than their CRT cousins and use less power. I have written about LCD televisions extensively in other articles so I will forego further explanation here.

Plasma Screen Televisions. In this technology, different gases are trapped between two panes of glass and an electronic signal can modify them to allow them to display a picture. These televisions are produced with a sleek thin design and can produce excellent resolution.

No matter which video display you are leaning toward, make sure to measure the area you want to put the TV so it fits when you bring it home. Also look into whether the screen is able to handle high definition (HD) television and DVDs.

Audio Elements

The sound system is going to make a huge difference in the enjoyment and functionality of your home theater. A good audio system includes the following elements:

Receiver. This component takes the audio signal, and often the video signal, and distributes it to the proper part of your system.

Amplifier. This component is what increases the signal strength before it is sent to the speakers. Often times, a purchased receiver will have an amplifier already built into it, making an additional piece of equipment unnecessary.

Surround Sound Speakers. Standard speaker sets of five are typical for most home theaters. There is a center channel, a right front, right rear, left front and left rear. These different speakers, when properly positioned, make the sound come from the appropriate direction.

Data / Signal Source

A basic DVD player is a standard signal source in most theater systems. The signal information sent from the player contains the video data as well as your 5.1 surround sound. Your cable box or digital satellite is also signal sources for a home theater. These sources can all be used in one system with the proper wiring and remote programming.

To properly identify refurbished plasma TVs from the more risky reconditioned units, here are some of the types of electronics that qualify as refurbished:

Exterior and/or shipping damages

Plasma TVs that have been shipped can sometimes be damaged. However, damages are usually minor and involve only the exterior of the product or the packaging itself. So if the plasma TV unit suffers from a few scratches, dents or packaging tears, most retailers will return them to the source - the manufacturer.

The manufacturer then checks the product and replaces any of the exterior parts that have obvious damages. The TV is then repackaged and labeled as 'refurbished' but sold as a new unit.

Overstock

Overstock plasma TVs are simply models that have not been sold even after new models have come out. As a result, they are often labeled as overstock by the retailers who then sell them at discounted prices during clearance sales. Sometimes, they are considered refurbished plasma TVs with prices slashed at significant discounts. There simply is nothing wrong with the items because they're essentially brand new. They're merely being sold cheaper and labeled refurbished just to make way for new ones.

Demo TVs

Ever wondered what happens to all those plasma TVs being made to run several hours at the shop or trade shows for the customers to view and appreciate? They are considered as demo units, short for demonstration units. Some of these are sent back to the manufacturer who checks the TVs, makes the necessary repairs and then repackages them as refurbished plasma TVs.

Production defects

Sometimes, a defective part or component may be discovered on a batch of plasma TVs. Should this happen, the manufacturer may issue a recall of the products, check the units and replace the parts. In some cases, they replace the defective parts, distribute the units to retailers who then sell them as refurbished plasma TVs.

Customer return

There are customers who buy plasma TVs and for some reason or another, decide to return the unit. This usually happens for a full refund within the limited period of the manufacturer's money-back guarantee. The manufacturer then checks and tests the TV to determine if there are any damages or malfunctioning parts. If there's nothing, they will simply resell the TV at a reduced price. This is when you get the unit at an 'open box' discount.

So should you buy refurbished?

As you can see, it's quite difficult to determine for sure why a plasma TV unit was considered refurbished. More often than not, the retailer or manufacturer won't tell you the real reason why.

To find out if a refurbished plasma TV is a good buy, ask if the unit was refurbished by the manufacturer/factory or by a third party. Third party repackaging are significantly cheaper but may not offer the same warranty as the manufacturer. Ask about parts and labor warranty as well, along with the return policy. You might also want to know if the retailer offers an extended warranty policy. You really don't need to buy - it's simply an indication that the retailer is willing to stand by his product and that's usually a good assurance for you.

3D is an exciting new feature for the home theater market. For some dramatic movies or soap operas, 3D might seem out of place. But for sports, action movies, etc. 3D makes as much difference as color vs. black and white. And the new 3D technology is superior to the 3D system that has been used in theaters.

The commercial successes of recent 3D films like "Beowulf", "Meet the Robinsons", and "Journey to the Center of the Earth", is sparking interest with the movie studios to produce more 3D content material. Disney, Universal, Philips, Samsung, Sony, Thomson and IMAX are currently exploring the potential 3D HDTV market. Disney said it would begin making all its computer-animated films in 3D. According to Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, all of the major studios have 3D projects under way. There will be over 2,500 theatre screens equipped with the Digital 3D technology by the end of 2009. All of this content will be available to the home theater market. The Big Question: will the 3D market be pervasive enough for major networks, especially the sports subset, to broadcast in 3D?

3D Distribution

It will likely be the satellite TV companies like DirecTV and Dish Network that distribute 3D versions of HDTV programming first. 3D movies should take about the same bandwidth as other 120 fps (frame per second) high def movies. The satellite companies have enough broadcast bandwidth to support niche markets (the cable companies do not), and for now, 3D HDTV is a niche market.

"Satellite's going to be constrained not so much by how many channels they can carry than by how many they can get," said Bob Scherman, Satellite Business News.

By 2010, it is projected that 60% of TV receivers in the United States will use a satellite signal, up from 15% in 2002.

3D HDTV Home Theater Systems

Because of the high frame rate for 3D, and the need for synchronization, LCD screens are generally incompatible with advanced 3D. However, prototypes by Phillips have been demonstrated at upwards of $20,000, and this technology does not require glasses. The Phillips technology is optically very complicated. Unlike electronics, it cannot be assumed that the price will come down.

By the end of this year (2008), more than one million 3D ready DLP HDTVs, manufactured by Mitsubishi and Samsung, will have been sold in the U.S. The technology functions by supplying a 60 Hz signal to each eye (equivalent to 120 Hz total). These sets can display standard HDTV, and are compatible with 3D material. Some source material is available for download, and Blu-Ray 3D discs are becoming available. "Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert" was the first 3D Blu-ray Disc.

The Glasses: Field Sequential 3D

Special glasses are used with the DLP 3D system. The system is called "Field Sequential 3D" or HQFS (High Quality Field Sequential). This technology uses electronic shutter glasses instead of red-blue lenses we are used to at the movies. The effect is definitely superior. Our eyes see a slightly offset view of a scene. The two slightly different views are combined by the brain to result in our ability to see in 3D. Field Sequential 3D simulates this experience with shutter glasses. The shutter is not mechanical, but instead an LCD filter, that blocks vision when the opposite eye's view is shown.

A HDTV set with 120 Hz refresh rate is recommended for 3D viewing. The 3D system uses half of the total information for each eye. If we use a TV with a total of 60 Hz refresh rate, it would supply only 30 Hz to each eye, and that refresh rate would be visible (flicker).

When designing a 3D system with previous 3D techniques, we have the choice of either sending two equal bandwidth signals with full information, effectively doubling the signal bandwidth, or sending the signal such that either the horizontal or vertical resolution is halved, one half for each eye. Doubling the bandwidth would be a problem since the HDTV signal bandwidth capacity is already at a premium. Using the same bandwidth as non-3D material means that we can utilize the technology with current HDMI or DVI interfaces.

The alternative to cut resolution is unattractive, since we have worked to so hard to increase our system to high definition, we don't want to compromise. By using alternate frames for each eye, we see a high definition signal without flicker.

Two sets of wireless shutter glasses, with a control transmitter (InfraRed (IR), the same technology as the TV's remote control) cost about $100.

"Hang-Ups" Holding up DLP

Many consumers have a fascination with the idea of hanging their new big screen HDTV on the wall, like a painting. It's worth noting that most LCD and Plasma big screen TVs never actually get mounted on the wall. It is a significant challenge to mount something that weighs 60-150 pounds on the wall, and once installed, it's a continuing challenge for maintenance (for example, a 50 inch Pioneer PDP-5070HD weighs 128 pounds).

According to the NPD Group, only 13 percent of current LCD TV owners and 25 percent of plasma TV owners have their set mounted on the wall.

DLP is very popular among those who want larger high picture quality screens at affordable prices. For the money, DLP easily provides the highest quality-size value. An LCD of the same size and price will not have the picture quality of a DLP. DLP is also available in larger screen sizes then LCD televisions.

However, a DLP rear projection TV is a few inches thicker than an LCD or Plasma screen. LCD screens are usually 7-10 inches thick; DLP sets are usually 12-17 inches thick. Because of the fascination with mounting their sets on the wall, this difference of a few inches becomes the deciding factor for many consumers' purchase decisions.

Texas Instruments, who manufactures the DLP chips in a foundry in South Korea, sees renewed potential for the technology, which uses tiny mirrors on a semiconductor. The new LED Light Engine call "Phlatlight" (manufactured by Luminus) replaces the arc lamp and color wheel design of previous DLP HDTVs. Samsung has had their own proprietary LED lamp system for a couple of years. The LED Light Engine will need to be replaced infrequently (unlike the cold-cathode fluorescent lamps that had to be replaced every few years).

DLP HDTVs with an LED engine are more energy efficient than comparably sized flat panel displays, and the lack of a moving color wheel in the design means they perform with less noise. The DLP chip is faster than any other HDTV technology, with the mirrors switching on and off more than 15,000 times per second to deliver a picture without blur for fast moving images such as sports.

DLP HDTV sets are a very smart choice for most people, but be selective. Many of the HDTV sets in stores still do not have important technology, such as LED backlights.

The compatibility of the TV for 3D can be verified by looking for an input on the back of unit, marked "3D Ready".

Home Theater Personal Computer (HTPC)

An important trend in the home theater is the integration of the personal computer (PC) with the home theater. Integrating a PC into your home entertainment center has many advantages in addition to enabling 3D video. Downloading movies is one of the advantages. The HTPC should have a graphics card with a DVI connector (Digital Video Interface). Both XP and Vista will support Microsoft's product for the home theater.

HDTV and 3D video is computation intensive, meaning a high-performance computer. For 720p videos, a dual core microprocessor is needed; 1080p or 1080i videos require a quad core microprocessor for smooth playback. Video files are very large (!), so the larger the hard-drive, the better.

DirectX 9 graphics drivers (software) need to be installed, if they are not already present. To find your current version, Click "START" and then "RUN" from your Windows desktop. Type "dxdiag" in the "Run" box.

Software is available from several different vendors; "StereoPlayer" (Version 1.3.4) from 3DTV.at is available. Purchase of StereoPlayer is about $50. While you are at 3DTV.AT also download the GPL MPEG-1/2 Decoder. Alternatives to Stereoplayer include "Dynamic Digital Depth" (ddd.com), "Stereoscopic Player" and "Tridef Visualizer".

3D technology has become a major force in Hollywood. It is probable that this trend will repeat in the home theater. CRT and DLP work best with 3D technology, though plasma systems are also available. DLP offers the better value for big screens using HDTV, not just 3D HDTV.

First of all the Samsung LN40A650 40-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV. I was a little hesitant about buying a TV of this size online but now that I've gone through the process I would do it again in a heart beat.

I've had my TV for about 4 months now and I'm still completely blown away by clarity, detail and colors this set produces. The LN40A650 has three HDMI inputs on the back, and one HDMI input on the left side which made all of my electronic devices really easy to install. I then watched several movies all on Blu-ray, oh by the way movies are a great way to show off your new set.

The 40" is the only model in the 6 series that has a fan built into the screen. Some people may be put off because of this but the good news is that this fan is completely inaudible. I have never heard the fan while the set was running, so it is extremely quiet.

When I first saw the color of the set I was indifferent. I don't really care for the color red but now that I have the set, it's slowly growing on me. All of the stock Samsung photos show a vibrant red but with my 40A650 in the living room it has the perfect amount of color. It's not strong enough to steal my focus away while watching TV but at the same time it looks great when the TV is shut off.

I'd like to point out this set features a ton of options. This is both a blessing and a curse. Most features are inaccessible for one reason or another, making calibration a brain busting headache. Hours of my own tinkering has finally resulted in perfect color settings, without washing out the picture, losing precious pixels of color.

I did a lot of research before deciding on this Samsung. I wanted 1080p with Auto Motion Plus 120Hz, and I wanted at least a 40 inch screen. After spending a few hours comparing this model with comparable models, I bought this one because of the quality and features of the set.

The sound is impressive for an internal sound system. Comparing it to even the cheapest of 5.1 setups though, make this LCD's tunes seem puny and weak.

Overall I'm extremely pleased with the Samsung LN40A650 40-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV.

The biggest buzzword in the audio/visual (A/V) industries today is "digital convergence," which means that we can do away with many of the buzzwords of the past. They are all joining forces under a nice, new, umbrella term to bring you the future of everything from home entertainment to national security. Essentially, everything "audio" and everything "video" is going to place nice together now that they all speak in 0's and 1's.

Well, that's the idea, anyway -- and it's a good one that a lot of smart folks are working on. It encompasses a whole lot more than A/V, including supercomputers, particle accelerators, telecommunications, even rocket science. Our concern in this article, though, is with those things that most people would be likely to use most often. We will discuss digital convergence as it affects music, TV and video.

Music systems
Throughout the postwar years, home audio components went through various evolutionary phases - from slate to vinyl records, from reel-to-reel to cassette tapes, etc. - but they were all "analog" technologies. The general idea didn't change much until the late 1990s. Until then, it was a simple matter of hooking up a record player and/or tape deck to an AM/FM receiver/amplifier combo, wiring the speakers and cranking up the volume.

In 1998, however, all that changed when a Korean company introduced the first device for playing compressed digital music files. These files were called "mp3" as they occupied the third "layer" of the MPEG file, whose standards are overseen by the Moving Picture Experts Group. The actual developer of the "codec" (for "compress/decompress") was Fraunhofer, a German company that licenses the technology to others.

Of course, "digital music" had been around since the introduction of the CD in the early 1980s. However, later advances in computers, plus the advent of the Internet, created pressure for the creation of files smaller than those of CD-Audio, which take up a hefty 10MB of space for every minute. With mp3 files taking up one-tenth that much space, it became feasible to build devices with memory chips in them to play the new music format. Smaller, downloadable from the Internet and easily stored (and copied) with computers, mp3 files-and the players that followed their development-revolutionized home audio.

Today, the question when shopping for a new component or whole new home audio system is what generation of devices to get or keep. If you have a record player that still works, and you like vinyl, you can stick with them. If you have cassettes and a decent tape deck, those will work too. If you want to upgrade but price is a consideration, you can also buy any number of high-powered boomboxes or "bookshelf size" mini-stereos.

But without a doubt, the buzzword for audio is "convergence," meaning that the new digital devices will work with your computer, and all your other digital devices, to bring the "digital entertainment emporium" into your home. Not only can you buy commercial releases for download, and download many "indie" bands' music for free, you can also go all the way and install a wireless audio/video network for the ultimate in home A/V systems. For music lovers, the future is now.

Television grows up
Despite the speed of progress in audio technology, nothing has changed any faster in the past few decades as television. Among the greatest changes have been with various display technologies that have made the old "tube TVs" obsolete. TVs now come in all sizes but mostly with one shape, the new, movie-theater-like 16:9 ratio. The people who bought the first televisions in the 1940s wouldn't even recognize some of the new TV sets.

Today's most popular, most desirable TVs are the flat panels, which can be based on a number of different display technologies such as plasma, LCDs (Liquid Crystal Displays), rear projection and LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). In just about five or six years, the cost of a 42-inch plasma display, for example, has fallen from about $5,000 to under $800. Price reductions are just as common among the other types of TVs, too.

The main trouble with TVs today is the proliferation of special terms about the display resolution and the type of programming that can be displayed. Terms like "HD" and "hi-def" and "1080i" are tossed around advertisements and commercials without so much as an explanation. Essentially, the numbers refer to the horizontal lines of resolution and having 480 or more qualifies as "HD." But the fact is, the most important features to understand are the ones you are buying.

In other words, when shopping, buying and installing new TVs, you need to study up on exactly those options and features that are built in to the sets you've selected. There may be special connectors, cables, etc., that are required for your television. Some TVs are actually just monitors and don't even have the channel tuners built-in - they have to be added on as an option. There are also things to learn about integrating the new generation of TVs into home theater systems, so do the appropriate research on Google (or at your local library) and get the information before you pull out your checkbook.

It is important, when investing in any kind of new technology such as plasma TVs, to read all the literature, from the manufacturer as well as independent reviewers, to ensure that you understand how the sets operate. Once you have everything you need, you can tune in, turn on and drop out for some great viewing with those big, colorful new TVs. And, being digital creatures, they will work nicely with your other digital gear, bringing that long-awaited convergence ever closer.

Video for work and play

From the 1970s through the early 1990s, "video game" meant either a Pong unit connected to a television or a bulky arcade monstrosity. Watching "a video" meant popping a book-sized tape cassette into a player that connected to the TV. And "making a video" meant lugging a 30-lb. VHS (or 20-lb. VHS-C) camera around. There still are arcades, and there are still people with VHS (even Betamax) tapes and cameras, but with home theater audio and 60-inch LCD panels now available, you can have state-of-the-art arcade gaming and movie watching in your own living room, surround sound and all. And it's all digital now, of course.

Today, the game side of video is all about the "consoles" - meaning the Nintendo Wii, the Sony PlayStation and the XBox 360 from Microsoft. They are all fairly small, have powerful CPUs, advanced graphics subsystems and the full range of CD and DVD compatibilities for music, audio, video and compressed multimedia files. Hackers have even found a way to install computer operating systems on some of these devices, and use them as gaming machines, word processors and even Web browsers.

Of course, video arcades are still around, too, and the newest models have "feedback mechanisms" installed so that, for instance, in a race-car game the "driver" feels engine vibration, hears the tuned exhaust note and gets a nice, throaty squeal by stepping on the brakes. Enclosed game structures promise better and more realistic action all the time as the holy grail of "virtual reality" draws closer all the time through the march of technology.

Computer gaming has matured, too, although entry-level computers are not up to the challenge. Gamers either "soup up" their own computers or buy from specialist PC builders, because the software makes tremendous demands on the CPU, the graphics processor and the display. Game manufacturers have the market covered, though, as their titles are usually released to all the major platforms and computing environments.

Video cameras have undergone a serious metamorphosis, too. From bulky, tape-based devices, recording-type cameras have evolved into small, powerful, solid-state marvels that capture full-motion video onto flash memory or hard drives. The digital files they create can be uploaded to computers for editing and playback, then copied to VCD or DVD for viewing in disc-based players. Compressed in the proper way, they can also be transferred to websites such as YouTube.

The new generation of "live" or broadcast cameras is also most impressive. Most people will have little contact with the professional broadcast cameras used in television studios, but they can acquire the same technology in low-cost but high-tech webcams, miniature "spycams" and sophisticated surveillance/security video cameras. For very little money, one can buy surveillance cameras that pan, tilt and zoom by remote control, or that detect and follow motion in their field of view.

These new digital security cameras can be either wired or wireless, and connected to TV monitors, video recording devices and/or computers. The PC-based systems are perhaps the most impressive, as there are sophisticated software applications for scheduling, controlling and recording input from one or a dozen cameras. The capabilities are astonishing, especially considering the ever-lower prices as time goes on. Better technology for less money? Quite a deal.

Convergence is coming

We've been hearing this rallying cry for a few years now, and perhaps "is coming" is not the right way to put it. The digital data streams carrying music, TV, movies and live action camera images can all "converge" today, right on your PC or Macintosh (or Linux-based computer), as well as in your home theater system. It is more accurate to say, "Convergence keeps coming," just as technology keeps getting cheaper, better and more widespread.

The road is not without speed bumps, of course, and there will always be people who don't quite get it, can't understand the concepts and are unable (or unwilling) to learn to use it. Unfortunately, these people will not be able to keep up with the rest of us who are getting our news at lightspeed over the Internet, posting home videos on the family website, "ripping" music CDs into mp3 files for a matchbox-sized player, setting up a surveillance camera at the company warehouse or streaming an HD movie straight from the computer to the flat panel TV. There are an infinite number of possibilities, now that all these devices are speaking (pretty much) the same language.

It's the digital language, a robust and limitless range of expression that can be constructed, as stated previously, out of strings of 0's and 1's. It's an exciting thing to be a part of, this convergence. And just as that Energizer Bunny keeps going, and going, and going, the digital convergence just keeps coming, and coming, and coming.

What exactly is HDTV, and what does it mean for me?

HDTV. You know you want one. We all do. We've heard that HTDV offers greater clarity than we're used to seeing, smoother motion, richer colors, surround sound, and the potential for improved performance from the various pieces of equipment that we want to work together. But before you buy, it's helpful to understand the technology and its related issues.

First, just buying an HDTV and plugging it into a standard cable box doesn't give you high-definition television. To watch high-definition TV, you need three components: an HDTV source, an HDTV channel, and the HDTV show itself. Your source, the HDTV set, can display both regular and HDTV images, but standard analog television displayed on an HDTV set can be disappointing. True, it probably displays a little better than on a standard set, but it is still a far cry from what we expect from HDTV. Also, large screen sets in particular exaggerate the flaws in the standard programming, making them glaringly obvious.

As for the channel and the show, most major networks are now broadcasting many of their prime-time shows in high definition on their HD channels, and various other networks are broadcasting in high definition, as well. However, cable and satellite providers that don't carry all of the available networks and HD channels don't broadcast all of their content in HD. Finding your favorite show in high definition can be a hit-and-miss undertaking.

The good news is that this is going to change. The United States is currently in the process of converting to digital television (DTV). As of July 1, 2006, all new televisions 25 inches or larger must contain either integrated DTV tuners that can receive high-definition programs by simply connecting an antenna, or must be "DTV ready." DTV-ready sets require a separate tuner (or cable or satellite box) to display high-definition programming. Subscribers to pay television (cable or satellite) with an HDTV-ready set do not require the DTV tuner, but can instead watch HDTV by using a set-top box that tunes HDTV channels.

HDTV sets that are "digital cable ready" (DCR) can tune the digital cable without needing the external box, but they require a special cable card, available from the cable provider.

On March 1, 2007, all new 13-inch or larger sets must have DTV tuners or be DTV-ready. However, although the FCC has mandated the DTV tuner dates, it has not mandated that sets sold must be able to display HDTV resolutions. Consumers wanting to view HDTV the way it is meant to be viewed are wise to make sure that a new set has this capability.

On February 17, 2009, over-the-air analog broadcasts will shut off, and all broadcasting will be DTV. After that date, standard NTSC televisions will not receive on-air broadcasts, but the government might subsidize converter boxes for those unable to make the switch.

HDTV Basics

HDTV refers to high-definition television (or, as some prefer, Huge Darned TV). It is not the only digital broadcasting format, but it is considered to be the best. It offers better resolution than other digital television standards, and a better color display than our current analog televisions that are based on the NTSC standard used in North America.

NTSC stands for the National Television Systems Committee, a body that set the standards in 1953, although video professionals are likely to tell you tongue in cheek that the initials really mean Never Twice the Same Color. The NTSC standard is legendary for reception problems leading to color distortionan issue that should not occur with HDTV.

HDTV broadcasts widescreen pictures with superior detail and quality than either analog TV or other types of digital television (DTV). HDTV's superiority stems from three factors: aspect ratio, resolution, and frame rate.

A standard analog television has an aspect ratio of 4:3 (meaning four units wide and 3 units high), giving the "almost square" shape that is also common in computer monitors. However, with an aspect ratio of 16:9 (16 units wide and 9 units high), HDTV provides a "movie theatre" look for TV shows or movies shot in widescreen. Complications arise because not all television is shot in widescreen. With standard or high-definition 4:3 programming, HDTV might display vertical black bars on both sides of the screen, or might stretch or zoom the picture.

Problems created by aspect ratio have workarounds, but this requires that your television or the video source (i.e., satellite tuner, cable box or DVD player) have aspect-ratio control. To avoid disappointment, ensure that the television you are going to buy offers this function.

As for resolution or picture detail, HDTV offers more than twice the sharpness of analog TV. Analog has the resolution equivalent of 640x480 pixels, meaning 480 lines of visible detail. At its highest level, HDTV has a resolution almost six times better1,920x1,080 pixels, or 1,080 lines of visible detail.

HDTV is available in two different resolutions: 1,080i and 720p. The former has more lines and pixels, but the latter has a progressive-scan format that delivers a smoother image during motion. One is not necessarily better than the otherjust different. A third format, 1,080p, combines the best features of the two, but programming content is rare.

Frame rate refers to the number of times a set creates a complete picture on the screen every second. As mentioned above, frame rates ending in "i" are interlaced, and frame rates ending in "p" are generally progressive. With progressive frame rates, or progressive scans, the lines of each frame are drawn in sequence across the screen from left to right. In an interlaced frame rate or scan, only every second line is drawn, and then the process is repeated to fill in the gaps.

DTV frame rates range from 24 frames per second to 60 frames per second. Therefore, a "1,080i HDTV" has a resolution of 1,920x1,080 pixels, and can display 60 frames per second, interlaced.

Looking Ahead

It's safe to predict that an HDTV bought now won't become obsolete any time soon. It's also a safe prediction that, as time passes, they'll come down even more in price, and that more and more content will be offered in HD format.

Some analysts expect to see increased content available in on-air broadcasting, given the FCC's mandate around the DTV tuners. And it's definitely my prediction that HDTV will have many of us tearing our hair out when we set it up and do the fine-tuning!
